Children have been hardest hit by the growing gap between haves and have-nots in Israel in recent years. Recent reports indicate that more than one-third of Israeli children live below the poverty line. Many of these children attend school without having eaten a nourishing breakfast, and without sufficient lunch supplies to concentrate on their studies.
In 2006, Hands on Tzedakah, a 501 (c) 3 public charity based in Florida approached Leket Israel to create a program to provide school kids with a minimum of one healthy meal per day. Now nearing the end of the second year, Leket Israel volunteers prepare and deliver more than 4,400 mid-morning meals to students at 70 schools around Israel. Each school day, "our" kids receive a freshly baked roll filled with hummus, cream cheese, yellow cheese, chocolate spread or tuna, and a fresh fruit or vegetable (usually "rescued" through Leket Israel's Project Leket).
You can help to expand the program by buying our Sandwich for Kids Gift Cards to give to your friends on ‘that special occasion’ instead of another plant or dish that they really don’t need. To see what the Gift Card looks like,
